Review of 'New Build' Rigs & Equipment
Focus on assurance that operational or Safety critical new equipment & systems are delivered in compliance with Client / API / Applicable Standards.
This can include:
- High Pressure Mud & Cement Equipment - Hoses, Valves, Manifolds...
- Lifting & Hoisting Equipment - Elevators, Links, Block, Pipe Handling...
- Drill Sting & Ancillary Equipment...
- Prevention of Dropped Objects...
- Critical Gauges, Pressure Relief Valves.
- Review of Equipment that interfaces with the Drill String - Lift Caps, Torquing Equipment (Top Drive, Iron Roughneck)
- Review of commissioning procedures and records to ensure that systems are properly tested and calibrated prior to use.
Review of ‘Existing’ Rigs & Equipment
Focus on appropriate maintenance of the operational or Safety critical systems (as listed earlier) and confirm validity of current certification. Ensure maintenance is performed by adequately licensed Contractor (OEM where required according to Standards) using currently certified personnel, using controlled procedures.
Review of Drill String Related Procedures & Practices
Review what data the crew use when they are using equipment (Make-up Torque, Overpull Limits, Friction Factors). Confirm what levels of checks are done on equipment prior to use, and what is done “while using”.
- Shows the pipe in the derrick pulled together using the tugger line wrapped round it.
- Shows a 1/2” groove worn into the pipe body by the tugger line (went unnoticed by the crew).
- Shows thread compound contaminated with water, paint and oil. This has a significant effect on Friction Factor of the compound, therefore the torque that the connection can handle within its design limitations.
